In the Book of Isaiah we read:
וחלליהם ישלכו, ופגריהם יעלה באשם; ונמסו הרים מדמם.
“Their slain also shall be cast out, and the stench of their carcasses shall come up, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood” (Is 34:3).
Yet we also find in this book:
ואתה השלכת מקברך כנצר נתעב לבש הרגים, מטעני חרב; יורדי אל אבני בור, כפגר מובס. - - -
“But you are cast forth away from your grave like an abhorred offshoot, in the raiment of the slain, that are thrust through with the sword, that go down to the pavement of the pit, as a carcass trodden under foot” (Is 14:19).
It is not clear how the Greek (and English) translators determined that מובס (muvas) means “trodden under foot.” However, the comparison between these verses suggests that מובס
(muvas) is a letter-deletion, sibilant letter exchange, and order-type error of: מבואש (mevoash) - “malodorous.”
We also read in the Book pf Isaiah:
ויצא מלאך יהוה ויכה במחנה אשור, מאה ושמנים וחמשה אלף; וישכימו בבקר והנה כלם
פגרים מתים.
“And the angel of YHWH went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses” (Is 37:36; see also: 2 Ki 19:35).
נשבע יהוה צבאות לאמר: אם לא כאשר דמיתי, כן היתה, וכאשר יעצתי, היא תקום. -
לשבר אשור בארצי, ועל הרי אבוסנו; וסר מעליהם עלו, וסבלו מעל שכמו יסור. -
“YHWH of hosts had sworn, saying: Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand. That I will break the Assyrians in My land, and upon My mountains tread him under foot; then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulder” (Is 14:24-25).
However, here again the comparison to the previous verses suggests that אבוסנו (avusenu) is a misspelled אבאישנו (avishenu) - “I will make him
