The association between Esau and Edom is mention in the Bible several times such as in: עשו הוא אדום - “Esau--the same is Edom” (Gen 36:1; see also: Gen 32:4; 36:8, 9, 43; Jer 49:7-10; Ob 1:1-8; Mal 1:2-4). Yet in the Book of Genesis we find: אלה בני עשו ואלה אלופיהם, הוא אדום - - “These are the sons of Esau, and these are their chiefs; the same is Edom” (Gen 36:19). However, it appears likely that here the original order of the words was: אלה בני עשו, הוא אדום, ואלה אלופיהם - - “These are the sons of Esau, the same is Edom, and these are their chiefs.” In the Book of Isaiah we read:
אך אולים שרי צען, חכמי יעצי פרעה, עצה נבערה; איך תאמרו אל פרעה, בן חכמים אני - - -
“The princes of Zoan are utter fools; the wisest counsellors of Pharaoh are a senseless counsel; how can ye say to Pharaoh: I am the son of the wise” (Is 19:11).
It seems that the Greek and English translators struggled with חכמי יעצי פרעה, עצה נבערה. However, if the word-order here will be changed to: חכמי פרעה, יעצי עצה נבערה - “the wise man of Pharaoh, who advise a foolish advice”, this verse becomes much clearer.
In the Book of Isaiah we find;
לכן ידע עמי שמי; לכן ביום ההוא,
“Therefore My people shall know My name; therefore [they shall know] in that day” (Is 52:6).
The Greeks translated this verse as follows: “Therefore My people shall know my name in that day”, and it appears that he believed that here the second לכן (lachen) - “therefore” word is superfluous. However, it appears more likely that the in the original form of these verse the word order was:
ידע עמי שמי לכן ביום ההוא, - “Therefore in that day, My people shall know My name.”
In the Book of Jeremiah we read:
ונבחר מות מחיים, לכל השארית הנשארים, מן המשפחה הרעה הזאת בכל המקמות - - -
הנשארים אשר הדחתים שם, נאם יהוה צבאות.
“And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue that remain of this evil family, that remain in all the places whither I have driven them, said YHWH of hosts” (Jer 8:3).
However, the literal translation of: בכל המקמות הנשארים אשר הדחתים שם - is: “in all the places that remain, which I have driven them there.” It is therefore no wonder that the Greek translator disregarded here the word הנשארים - “that remain.” The English translation: “that remain in all the places whither I have driven them” indicates that the translator believed that
בכל המקמות הנשארים אשר הדחתים שם - is a word disorder of:
הנשארים בכל-המקמות אשר הדחתים שם - “that remain in all the places whither I have
driven them.”
In the Book of Hosea we read: דבר-יהוה אשר היה אל-הושע - “The word of YWWH that
came to Hosea” (Hos 1:1; see also: Joel 1:1; Mic 1:1; Zep 1:1).
Yet in the Book of Jeremiah we find: אשר היה דבר-יהוה אל-ירמיהו - “The word of YHWH
that came to Jeremiah” (Jer 14:1; see also: Jer 46:1; 47:7; 49:3; Dan 9:2).
However, the comparison between these verses and the understanding of the English (but not the
Greek) translator suggest that אשר היה דבר-יהוה אל-ירמיהו is a word-disorder of:
אשר היה אל-ירמיהו דבר-יהוה - “The word of YHWH that came to Jeremiah.”
In the Book of Jeremiah we read:
הנני שלח לדוגים)לדיגים(רבים, נאם-יהוה--ודיגום; ואחרי-כן אשלח לרבים צידים וצדום
מעל כל-הר ומעל כל-גבעה ומנקיקי הסלעים.
“Behold, I will send for many fishers, said YHWH, and they shall fish them; and afterward
I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain, and from
every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks” (Jer 16:16).
However, the content of this verse and the understanding of the Greek (and English) translators
suggest that לרבים צידים is a word disorder of לצידים רבים - “for many hunters.”
In the Book of Psalms we read: חציך שנונים: עמים תחתיך יפלו; בלב אויבי המלך - “Your
arrows are sharp--the peoples fall under you--[they sink] into the heart of the king's
enemies” (Ps 45:6).
However, it is highly likely that originally this verse appeared as:
חציך שנונים בלב אויבי המלך: עמים תחתיך יפלו - “Your arrows are sharp [they sink] into the
heart of the king's enemies, the peoples fall under you.
In the Book of Nehemiah we read:
מלכינו שרינו כהנינו ואבתינו, לא עשו תורתך; ולא הקשיבו אל-מצותיך ולעדותיך אשר
העידת בהם.
והם במלכותם ובטובך הרב אשר-נתת להם, ובארץ הרחבה והשמנה אשר-נתת לפניהם-לא
עבדוך; ולא-שבו ממעלליהם הרעים.
“Our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept Your law, nor hearkened to
Your commandments and Your testimonies, wherewith You did testify against them.
And they [have not served You] in their kingdom, and in Your great goodness that You gave
them, and in the large and fat land which You gave before them, neither turned they from
their wicked works” (Neh 9:34-35).
In spite of adding words that do not appear in the Hebrew version of these verses, the English
translation remains peculiar.
However, if we reorder the words: םהל תתנ-רשא ברה ךבוטבו to: בטובך הרב נתת להם אשר
“that in Your great goodness You gave them” then there is no need to add words and the meaning of these verses become clear and straightforward
