The Psalmist wrote: אדם להבל דמה; ימיו כצל עובר - “Man is like to a breath; his days are as a shadow that passes away” (Ps 144:4).
אך הבל כל אדם, סלה -
“Surely every man is vanity, Selah” (Ps 39:12).
Yet he also wrote:
אך בצלם יתהלך איש אך הבל יהמיון; יצבר ולא ידע מי אספם. - - - - - -
“Surely man walks as a mere semblance; surely for vanity they are in turmoil; he heaps [up riches], and knows not who shall gather them” (Ps 39:7).
However, the comparison between these verses suggests that אך בצלם יתהלך איש - - (uch betselem ithhalech ish) is a letter-substitution and mis-division err of: אך כצל מתהלך איש - -
(uch katsel mithhalech ish) - “yet a man walks as a shadow.”
The comparison also suggests that אך הבל יהמיון; יצבר - (uch hevel yehemayun itsbor) is also a letter-substitution and mis-division err of: אך להבל ידמה, הון יצבר - (uch lehevel idameh, hon itsbor) - “yet he is like a breath, he accumulates wealth” (e.g. Pro 1:13; 24:4). This suggestion is supported by the understanding of the Greek (and English) translators that these words should include “riches.”
In the Book of Job we read:
ידיך עצבוני ויעשוני; יחד סביב, ותבלעני.
זכר נא כי כחמר עשיתני; ואל עפר תשיבני. - - -
“Your hands have framed me and fashioned me together round about; yet You do destroy me! Remember, I beseech You, that You had fashioned me as clay; and will You bring me into dust again” (Job 10:8-9).
Yet the Psalmist wrote:
הנה טפחות, נתתה ימי וחלדי כאין נגדך; אך כל הבל כל אדם, נצב סלה. - - -
“Behold, You had made my days as hand-breadths; and my age is as nothing before You. Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. Selah” (Ps 39:6).
The Greek translator wrote here: “Surely every person alive is the sum total of vanity.” However, the comparison between these verses suggests that אך כל הבל כל אדם, נצב - - (uch kol hevel kola dam nitsav) is a letter-insertion and mis-division to words error of: אך כהבל כל אדם עצב - (uch kahevel kol adam u’tsav) - “yet like a breath every men is framed
